A homey once told me that one of the weaknesses I had as a writer was that I never fully dove into despair. Even my saddest songs ended with me finding silver lines in storm clouds and green sprouts in wastelands. Another teacher friend of mine recently told me that she noticed I didn’t sit with the suffering for very long, if at all. It probably has a lot to do with being a doer because the reflective process of a doer is all about determining what actions you can take to reach your desired outcome. There’s not a lot of letting the wallow-worthy happenings wash over you until they pass; it’s more grabbing a sword and diving towards the amorphous enemy.

But these past couple years have been hard, and this past winter was the hardest stretch, and my trusted weaponry was nowhere to be found.

So I sat and watched the gloom and melancholy and distress envelop me, and when I made it out the otherside, I wrote some songs about the experience and titled the collection “Good Thing the Long Days Keep Me Awake at Night.”
